A dripping tap is not usually a plumbing emergency, but it should not be ignored. A tap dripping once per second wastes over 15,000 litres of water per year, adding roughly £30–£50 to your water bill. It can also cause limescale buildup and eventually damage the tap mechanism beyond simple repair. Book a plumber for a non-urgent appointment to replace the washer or cartridge.

Same-day plumbing appointments are widely available in Boston for non-emergency work such as dripping taps, slow drains or minor leaks. If you call before midday, most plumbers can fit you in the same afternoon. For urgent same-day work, expect to pay a premium of £20–£40 over standard rates.

Stop flushing immediately and turn off the water supply to the toilet — there is usually an isolation valve on the pipe behind or beneath the cistern. If water is flooding the floor, lay down towels and open windows for ventilation. Avoid using chemical drain cleaners as they can damage your pipes and are hazardous. Call an emergency plumber if the blockage does not clear with a plunger.

Your internal stopcock is typically located under the kitchen sink, in a downstairs cupboard, or near the front door where the mains pipe enters your property. Turn it clockwise to shut off the water. If you cannot find or turn it, use the external stop valve in the pavement outside your property — you may need a stopcock key to operate it.

Check that the plumber holds relevant trade qualifications such as NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Plumbing. If they are working on gas appliances, they must by law be Gas Safe registered — ask for their registration number and verify it on the Gas Safe website. Membership of trade bodies like the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) is a further mark of competence.

Insulate all exposed pipes in your loft, garage and exterior walls with foam lagging — available for under £10 from any DIY shop. Keep your heating on a low background temperature (at least 12°C) even when you are out, and open loft hatches occasionally to let warm air circulate. If you are leaving the property empty in winter, consider draining the system or asking a neighbour to check daily.
